The Pugilist Pick Beard Comb: Handmade in the U.S.A by Beardsmen for Beardsmen September 3, 2014 09:59

The Pugilist Pick Beard Comb is a heirloom Beard Comb in a classic pick/rake style.  The Pugilist Pick is Handmade in the USA from various exotic, long-lasting hardwoods, by Beardsmen for Beardsmen. We could have purchased mass produced combs made in China and stamped with our name, however we wanted to have a USA made product, as all our Gentlemen's Grooming Products are!

Each comb is hand sanded for smoothness, so there's no snags or yanking of precious beard hairs. Unlike inexpensive plastic combs, wooden combs do not create static, so they're just hands down better for your whiskers.

The Pugilist Pick is approx. 3" X 2 1/2", a handy pocket size for constant beard grooming throughout the day and great for traveling. The body of the pick comb is made from red oak with decorative exotic burled bocote wood. The benefit of Hardwood combs is to reduce static buildup and discharge produced by most plastic combs, and help distribute your natural hair oil throughout your beard.

We start with a piece of red oak and cut out pieces  approximately 3 inches long. From there we cut the teeth on a table saw, paying careful attention to the spacing of each tooth. At that point it's over to a router where we cut away the area to create room for the decorative inlay wood. Next we glue and clamp the inlay wood to the oak and let it sit over night to create a strong bond with waterproof wood glue. The next step after drying is to drill the holes for the dowel rods for additional decorative styling and to hold all the pieces of wood together. We then glue the dole rods in place and then let them dry overnight again.

After drying comes the  finishing craftsmanship. Each pick is sanded on a bench top sander until it reaches it's final shape, paying special attention to all areas of the pick, to ensure a straight and smooth product. The next step in the process is to  partially finish with the bench top sander, before final hand sanding of the picks to ensure a smooth feeling across the body and teeth of the comb. The tips of the comb teeth are also slightly rounded, so no more worrying about scrapping or stabbing your face with a sharp plastic comb.

The final stage is feeding with a wood polish and conditioner, this produces a gentle sheen and helps preserve the combs for years of practical beard grooming use. We condition the picks with Howard Feed N Wax, a penetrating wood finish made from beeswax and carnauba, with a subtle orange scent. This helps embelish the final appearance of the picks and keeps the pick from absorbing the natural oils our bodies produce and drying out your beard or hair.

The Pugilist Pick Beard Comb is a necessity to gloriously groom and evenly distribute Pugilist Brand Beard Oils, as well as natural oils throughout your fantastic facial fleece and will last for years, if not decades.

Similar style combs have been excavated from Roman & Viking archaeological digs. A comb made of antler from around 150 to 200 CE and was found in Denmark, home of the Vikings, on the island of Funen. It is known as 'The Vimose Comb'. The Elder Futhark inscription reads "Harja", a Viking man's name and probable owner of the comb. This is the oldest known runic inscription. Runes were the Old Norse alphabet of the Vikings.

The comb is now housed at the  National Museum of Denmark, so two thousand years of bearded design history are on our side for grooming your beard. Become an immediate part of bearded folklore with our fearsome yet handsome Pugilist Pick Beard Comb.
