NEW Absinthe Beard Oil ( Black Licorice & Spice) February 18, 2015 13:35 1 Comment

Pugilist Brand Absinthe Beard Oil - For all Bearded Bohemian artistes and lovers of black licorice. Aniseed & Fennel with Hyssop, Coriander & Angelica Root herb & spice essential oils, as faithful to the original 19th century recipe as we could make it.  A favorite tipple of many Belle Époque painters, writers, free-thinkers and madmen. DO NOT DRINK, FOR TOPICAL USE ON FACIAL HAIR ONLY!

There has been a long fascination with Absinthe, a drink surrounded by myth, rumors and an infamous reputation.

Absinthe's roots lie in Ancient Egypt before being adopted by the French 200 years ago using local herbs, Aniseed, Fennel  & Wormwood. Spain was another popular location for absinthe, and the  only one never to have banned the beverage. In the U.S. New Orleans also holds a strong connection to absinthe.

It became the drink of choice for artists, writers, and intellectuals such as Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, Vincent Van Gogh with a reputation for hallucinations and wild behavior.

A popular nickname for absinthe is la fee verte (“the green lady”)

France’s Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) a time of peace and progress prior to World War I, public opinion of absinthe soured due to scandals and a bad reputation. Moving from vogue status to disgust and outright banning in Belgium, Brazil, Holland, Switzerland, and the United States in 1912. France, the epicenter of absinthe culture, finally banned absinthe in 1915.

Absinthe is now popular again and we wanted to produce a beard oil in reverence to it's artistic reputation.

Our Beard Oil contains Argan, Jojoba, Sweet Almond & Castor Carrier Oils for topical application to beards and facial hair to stimulate growth at the hair follicle, add sheen, prevent dryness and split ends treating both facial hair and underlying skin. Our Premium beard oils also alleviate beard itch and beard dandruff.

Essential Oils for aromatherapy and scent are added.

Aniseed & Fennel - Sweet, spicy and reminiscent of black licorice

Coriander ( Cilantro) - Sweet, herbaceous and warm, a very faint curry aroma. Refreshing and awakening .

Hyssop - Distilled from the Hyssop flower. Sweet medicinal appealing scent, with stimulant and tonic benefits.

Angelica Root - Angelica root has a peppery, rich, herbal, earthy, woody and musk odor. Used very sparingly due to it's strength.

Beard Oil & Skinny Jeans parody videos February 2, 2015 09:59

 Bearded Gentlemen realize the advantage of using beard oil  and beard balm to condition their beards,  moisturize the underlying skin, stop beard dandruff and help prevent split ends.  However, sometimes it's good not to take yourself too seriously. This video parodies the use of beard care products and we thought it was hilarious;

Saturday's Bearded News January 31, 2015 11:30

Pugilist Brand Gentlemen's Grooming Products has correlated a few items for hirsute gentlemen to read over the weekend.

Firstly a new documentary entitled 'The Winter of The Beard' explores the current beard fad, and what it means to be a man. Not sure we'd agree that the beard is a fad even if it is admittedly undergoing a renaissance. Check out the article and movie clips here ;

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/the-filter/11358088/Did-this-fascinating-documentary-spark-the-beard-trend.html

Next Lukas Haas is the most recent in the long line of celebrities to be spotted wearing a beard. Apparantly his beard is for a new movie role with Leonardo DiCaprio, rather than a fashion statement. See his gray mane here;

Lastly from the world of sports Washington Nationals Jason Werth will not have to shave his beard when he starts his prison sentence for speeding and wreckless driving next week

Tutankhamun's beard; Chief restorer demoted January 27, 2015 12:54

I'm sure most of you have read the somewhat hilarious story on the botched and rushed restoration of King Tut's beard by now. If you haven't the long story short version is that the 2000 year old mummy's decorative beard came off during a cleaning, and was glued back on and it was hoped no-one would notice it looked awful and the wrong glue was used.

To bring the story to fruition the conservation chief of Cairo's museum has now been demoted.

Dyed Neon Beards? January 24, 2015 10:20

We've had flowers, Christmas baubles now the latest trend is beards dyed in bright neon colors. The latest trend features bright DayGlo, neon colors and rainbow patterns. We're not sure what chemicals used in the dyes are and what effect this will have on beard conditioning? Will it dry out your beard? Make it more wiry or lead to split ends? Does it wash out? Personally I think we'll pass.

The Bucardo Mustache Mug December 29, 2014 11:30

Pugilist Brand Gentlemen's Grooming Products come across items for the bearded and mustachioed gentleman that we think are worthy of highlighting, due to their artistic or utilitarian nature. Our friends at Bucardo have an item that we feel is noteworthy for both of these descriptions. As a mustachioed man who likes his morning coffee, or afternoon tea, we get constant drips from our magnificent mustache to our t-shirt, especially annoying if the t-shirt is white. The Bucardo mug is a solution to this mustachioed problem as it offers a built-in ceramic mustache guard specially designed to alleviate this annoyance.

Pugilist Brand Gentleman's Grooming Products will be adding The Bucardo Mustache Mug to our online store very shortly for only $22.  Now think about how many shirts you've ruined with coffee drips, and you'll soon realize the mug will pay for itself within a week.

Back in the day, a gentleman knew how to protect his moustache. Now, a 19th century staple is revived for the modern man. The Bucardo Mug features original artwork and a classic moustache guard, a specialized semi-circular ledge with an opening that allows for safe passage of beverages while protecting your ‘stache. This is the first in a series of Bucardo Mugs celebrating moustachioed gentlemen of the world.

* 13 oz ceramic mug with moustache guard

* Original artwork by Southern California artist Jeff McMillan

* Dishwasher and microwave safe

The origin and science behind Santa's Beard December 24, 2014 11:58 1 Comment

Before the inception of Pugilist Brand Beard Care products, the original 'Father Christmas' figure dates back to 17th century England. Most pictures of Father Christmas before 1880 showed him wearing a big green coat. He wasn't much a gift-giver: he preferred going from house to house, feasting with random families.

In Dutch traditions, Sinter Klaas wears bishops robes and goes around the country finding out which children have been good or bad.

This legendary figure merged with Sinter Klaas once they both arrived to the New World.

STRANDS OF EVIDENCE

If we had a sample of Santa's beard, what could it tell us? Dr Raniero De Stasio, scientific director of L'Oréal UK and Ireland, reveals all:

Is his white beard natural or bleached?

"Bleached hair is very easy to spot, as there is a structural layer outside the hair cuticle cells that is lost forever with just one peroxide treatment. So, if Santa is using dye, we could spot it instantly by looking at a single hair under the microscope."

How old is he?

"This can be revealed by analysing his telomeres - structures at the ends of chromosomes that fray away with age. It would be best if the root of the hair was attached, so that more genetic material from active, live cells would be available."

Is he originally from Lapland?

"By analysing DNA from the hair and matching it to populations from different parts of Europe, we could settle the long-running debate as to where Santa comes from. With luck, you could even find a bit of his family genealogy."

Does he really drink the spirits that are left out for him?

"Hair grows about a centimetre per month, so assuming Santa's beard hairs are at least 12cm long, we would be able to find a spike of tannins which corresponded to heavy port intake a year ago. This might even allow scientists to speculate if Santa prefers port or brandy from year to year."

Does he live at the North Pole?

"Hair is a 'sponge', so by studying hair pollution data from various parts of the world and then matching the profile to various 'slices' of the hair fibre we could tell approximately where Santa has been each month of the year. As the air is very clean in Lapland, his hair would probably be very clean, with a spike of pollutants at Christmas time."

What does he eat?

"We can tell if he has a balanced diet, or likes a particular type of food (eg meat or vegetables), by testing the amount of trace metals normally found in various foods and matching it to the beard hair. My guess would be that Santa would not be a big venison eater, as it would remind him of Rudolph."

  • 'Can Reindeer Fly? The Science of Christmas' by Roger Highfield (Orion) is available for £7.99 + 99p p&p. To order, please call Telegraph Books on 0870 428 4112.

Magnum Opus Beard & Mustache Grooming Boxes December 19, 2014 17:14

Pugilist Brand Magnum Opus Beard & Mustache Grooming Kit boxes are individually hand crafted and unique. These masculine grooming boxes are made one by one in our home/office workshop not mass produced in a factory. Each one is completely individual as each box is sourced and reclaimed as we find them from local cigar shops. Please check the specific box description, availability and exact contents of the box before purchase.

Current boxes in stock can be found on our website here http://www.pugilistbrand.com/products/magnum-opus-grooming-kits

We personally source and reclaim exotic cigar boxes before power sanding, hand staining and clear coating them on the outside. The next step is to line the inside lid and/or the base of the box with suede and/or leather, before insetting the inside and outside of the lid with hand cut marquetry of our logo and branding. Finally we add various compartments to suit our fine selection of beard oil & mustache waxes content and add either a Hand Made Kent 81T Sawcut mustache comb or a Gentleman's Classic hardwood Beard Comb, sometimes both.

Each box is a unique, handmade collectors item and varies slightly depending on the wood, finish and rich individual patina of the specific wood grain. The box may contain small flaws as it's a reclaimed cigar box, that is reflected in the low box price of around $20 - $30 before the price of the contents.

Each box really is a labor of love, packed with a father lode of Pugilist Brand  handmade natural Beard Oils, Mustache Waxes  and/or Beard Balms. The Magnum Opus Grooming Kits are priced very reasonably, taking into account how much product it comes with (due to the reclaimed nature of the cigar box's natural wood material there might be slight imperfections such as warping, knots, holes and cracks.  We believe this adds to the rustic look of the grooming kit)

The boxes are practically a gift as a vehicle for getting our products into discerning beard growers & collectors hands, aimed at  select gentlemen who want a collection of beard oil and mustache wax fragrances to suit every mood, over months of daily grooming use.

Pugilist Brand Beard Care & Grooming Kit Drawstring Gift Bags November 17, 2014 11:36

In the early days of prizefighting & boxing, the winning pugilist would take home his winnings in an old-fashioned drawstring bag called a 'purse'. While the name may titillate, there was nothing feminine about such purses, most were claimed  by the victor after bare-knuckle fights with no pre-set rounds or time limits, the winner simply beating the loser unconscious or worse.  A drawstring purse was a crude precursor to the wallet, the term 'purse' for the monies awarded to the fighters is still used today in modern boxing.

Many Pugilist Brand Grooming kits come in a masculine burlap drawstring bag,  harking back to the origins of contact blood sports. In contrast with the past, the prize contained within are the best natural Premium Beard Oils, Organic Soaps, Beard Balms, Mustache Waxes and Gentlemen's Grooming products available on the market, made by Pugilist Brand right here in Santa Monica, California.

These make great birthday& holiday gifts for men as well as ideal stocking stuffers, they even come with a with a double sided gift card attached, so all you have to do is sign your name.  Unlike the bare knuckle fighters of old you won't need to put your good looks on the line as our cost to you are much more reasonable.

See Pugilist Brand's range of products such as Beard Oil, Beard Balm, Organic Beard Soap and The Combination Shaving Soap & Oil system available in the aforementioned masculine burlap Pugilist style drawstring gift bags with a double sided gift tag by clicking on the link below;

Customer review on Pugilist Brand Shaving Oil & Shaving Soap November 13, 2014 09:45

New customer review on Pugilist Brand Shaving Oil & Shaving Soap, from a customer in New England;

http://games-artist-and-fatherhood.blogspot.com/2014/11/a-bit-of-pugilist-movember-face-care.html?m=1

In the customers own words, in an excerpt taken from his blog review;

"The pre-shave oil, it's lovely and does a great job of helping to improve the shaving experience. The scent is subtle, not to over powering like the few others that I have tried, this also applies nicely with just a few drops in the palm of your hand and rubbed onto your face, without leaving a slimy or sticky feel."

"The shaving soap, loved this too. It fits a standard shaving cup/container, mine happens to be an old Crabtree and Evelyn tub. This also has a nice, yet subtle citrus scent which isn't over powering if you used a aftershave on top. This lathers up very easily and applies great. The lather doesn't get overly bubbly and keeps it's consistency on your skin for the duration of the shave, which is a balance I've not found in a few of the other soaps I've tried and something I really like about this. It's nice to get a soft feeling lather, yet still be able to see what you're doing when you shave. I've also yet to make a dent in this soap, so can see this lasting a long time too."
